6 Simple Steps for Using Sunless Tanning Sprays

Gaining the perfect, natural looking tan can be a nightmare. Streaky skin, wrong colour tone, and an uneven finish are by far the most common mistakes that are made. As common as the sunless tanning mistakes can be, they are easily avoidable with the know-how on how to properly use these sprays. If you want to look more like a bronzed goddess than an orangey brown nightmare, then read on for some useful tips.

Picking the right colour
Choosing the right colour tanning spray is vital to accomplishing a natural looking tan. Half of the time, the wrong colour can have you looking more like an Oompa Loompa than a healthy tanned beauty. That's why you always need to test a colour before buying and applying it. There are many different colours of tanning sprays available to reflect the fact there are many different skin tones. If you're stuck or unsure about what colour suits you, then ask a professional to help you make your choice.

Preparing your skin
Once you've bought your perfect colour spray, there's no doubt that you are going to want to transform that pale body as soon as possible. However, don't jump the gun just yet. You still need to prepare your skin so that you get an all over even tan. To prep, you'll need to wax, wash, and exfoliate to get rid of any excess skin, hair, and dirt.

Bare all and spray
Now you're fully prepped, the one thing left for you to do is get that sun tan spray all over your body. For a complete, all over tan, you should really strip off naked. However, if you're testing a new colour, then leaving your underwear on is a good idea, as it will give you a good comparison of your pre and post tan colour. Also, don't spray the palms of your hands or feet, as these areas never tan naturally.

Keep it loose
Your effort has paid off and now you're nicely tanned. The next step is to stop that tan streaking, smudging, or smearing away all of your hard work. To combat these three evils, you should wear loose clothing and flip-flops on your feet. That way, you'll look like a bronzed beauty and not somebody who's carelessly rolled through the mud.

Stay dirty for a while
Many people decide on using sunless tanning sprays before they go to bed. This is to ensure that the tan has a time to sink in and be fully absorbed by the skin. If you do not leave enough time between tanning and showering, then you do risk the chance of an uneven tan, as some areas of your body will absorb faster than others. If you can, leave 6-8 hours before having a shower.

Don't apply more until it fades
You want to leave your fake tan on as long as possible before applying a whole new tan. Let your tan fade fully. If you don't, then you'll be vulnerable to uneven tanning, as you'll be layering your new tan on top of your old one.

That's how to apply your sunless tanning spray with ease. If you want a great, natural spray that is used by many celebrities and for many TV shows, then head on over to Unreal. Their sprays have been creating beautiful bronzed bodies everywhere.

Spray Tanning - Your Questions Answered

The growing awareness of people to the cancer causing and aging effect of the suns rays has led many people to the pleasures of spray tanning. This has resulted in a growth of urban myths about tanning. Here we deal with many of the questions that we encounter most frequently.

What is a fake tan?

It's a sugar substance applied to the skin that reacts with the skin's amino acids to create a colour. The ingredient that activates this colour is DEHYDROXYACETONE (DHA) and it is the tanning agent used in all tanning lotions. It works on the surface layer of the skin. DHA is derived from fructose, a natural dehydroxide which is used in most good tans on the market.

How long will my spray tan last?

This depends on how well you prepare and take care of your skin and tan. Usually around 6 - 10 days. Healthy skin tans best!

Is spray tanning faster than UV tanning?

It most definitely is. To get a deep bronzed colour using UV beds will take at least 5 or 6 sessions which could take up to 3 hours and cost over £50. By comparison, spray tanning will take approximately 20 minutes and will normally cost about £25.00. So you save on time and money plus all the obvious health benefits of avoiding over exposure to the sun and UV rays.

Can I choose how dark my tan will be?

Yes, you can - but within reason. Different products give different tanning colours. Your salon will probably only use one manufacturer's product. In our salon we use St Tropez as we believe it to be the best (yes, we have tested many others). St Tropez offer 2 versions; standard and dark tans. The other alternative is to have a succession of tans on successive days. This will give you a darker shade and also a very big bill! There's no point in asking your technician to spray on more product in one session as there is a limit the amount your skin can absorb at one time.

Will I go orange after tanning?

This is one we get asked a lot. In our salon definitely not as we use St Tropez whose formula contains a hint of green which stops it ever going orange. We can't vouch for other products but have seen some shockers!

Will my tan be streaky?

Some care must be taken until the spray tan is dry on your skin. We always recommend our clients to wear loose clothing and flip flops after their treatment. Tight fitting clothing can rub the tan off before it's had a chance to dry.

Will the final colour be the same as immediately after I've been sprayed?

There's no clear answer to that one. B way of explanation I should explain how the tanning process works. The product that is sprayed on to you is a combination of the tanning agent and a guide colour. The purpose of the guide colour is to allow the technician to see which areas have been covered. The tanning agent takes about eight hours to fully work on your skin. We always recommend that you should not shower for at least eight hours after your spray tanning. The colour that then washes off is the guide colour. The final colour of your tan is dictated by your own skin colour. Those with darker skins will have a colour deeper than those with fair skins.

Why does my colour vary even going to the same salon?

The final shade of your tan is dictated by the condition of your skin. As your skin is a living thing, the colour of your tans can very dependent on diet, time of the month, stress, the season, medication and so on.

Spray on Tanning Equipment - Airbrush or HVLP? Which Is the Best Spray on Tanning Equipment to Buy?

Getting a spray on tan is a great alternative to lying out in the sun for hours on end trying to get that beautiful bronze color. However, there are many ways that a spray tan gets applied to your skin. There are rub on lotions, these are often very streaky looking when they dry. There are stand up, all over body spray machines that you can stand in at your typical tanning salon. Beware of these, as the chemicals generally found in these systems can be harmful. There are also two types of hand held spray on tan machines that many salons use that often times get confused. They are "airbrush" and there are "HVLP". Let's talk about the differences and why one may be better than the other for you to seek out when you get your next spray on tan.

First is the airbrush machine. This is very similar technology to what you would paint a car or exterior of your home with. This is relatively older technology in the spray on tan community. It consists of an air compressor that compresses the air and shoots it out in very high pressure through a nozzle that sprays out a fine mist onto the body. This is often the system that you will see that is accompanied by an exhaust system to eradicate the enormous excess of solution that is often expelled out of this system. In its day, this was a good way to apply tanning solution to the body. Thankfully, times and technology have changed!

Secondly, and often times mislabeled as airbrush, is the HVLP system. There are dramatic differences for the salon owner and consumer. Lets talk about a few basics. First, HVLP stands for High Volume, Low Pressure. This means that you still have a perfect amount of air flow necessary for a good tan, it's just that the pressure needed is far less. This is beneficial on many levels.

One is, far less solution is needed. This is great for the salon owner, and also for the client, as they will not be subjected to the massive fog bank created by the airbrush system. Secondly, the amount of over spray is dramatically reduced thus there is no need for expensive exhaust systems. Salon owners will also find that they will not find solution all over the walls, ceilings and other parts of their shop. HVLP has become the go to system for anyone that is serious about getting into the spray on tan business. It is also the best option for owning a mobile system.

HVLP has revolutionized the spray on tan industry. These spray tan systems are less expensive, more mobile, better return on investment and more requested by the salon owners and consumers alike. Get your next spray on tan from an HVLP system... you will be glad you did!
