How to Do Your Nails at Home

Getting your nails done is a weekly routine for some women and a rare treat for others. But as the recession continues to bite in the UK, more and more women are turning to home manicure kits and DIY nail art in an effort to cut bills without compromising their beauty regime.

Doing your own nails might sound daunting but by following a few simple steps, it's possible to get professional results at a fraction of the cost.

Do-it-yourself manicures

One of the most popular nail treatments is a manicure. Manicures are a great way to take care of your nails, and they can be as simple or elaborate as you want. To treat your nails to a simple manicure at home, start by taking off all traces of nail polish with a piece of cotton wool soaked in a gentle removal fluid. Then, immerse your hands in a sink full of warm water for around five minutes: this helps to clean your nails and make them more pliable. To give your hands a thorough clean, rub them with some abrasive body scrub to get rid of dead skin cells and promote smoothness. Wash and dab dry with a towel.

Next, take a nail buffer and go over the top of your nails to create an even surface. If you have cuticle oil, rub this into your nails and use a stick to push your cuticles back - not all women like to do this step, but it does create a cleaner end-result. Then, take your nail file and begin filing your nails to create a natural rounded shape. Remember to only file in one direction and round off any sharp tips.

When your nails are filed to your satisfaction, apply a layer of base coat to each nail. Base coat protects your nails so they are not discoloured by your polish. For a natural finish, simply apply a pearl or light blush coloured polish and let dry. Your manicure is complete at this stage - however, for a French manicure, you can paint your tips white. Or if you're getting ready for a night-out, forget the natural colours completely and opt for a classic red or a more contemporary shade like maroon.

Nail art at home

With the right tools and professional nail products, it's relatively simple to do your own nail art at home. For delicate patterns, invest in a nail art pen in gold or silver. This is perfect for painting the tips of your nails a different colour, or for drawing on small flowers. Glitter nails are also easy to do at home - simply buy some glitter nail polish or mix some glitter with clear nail polish and paint on over a layer of base coat. For an extra shiny and long-lasting dimension, add a new layer of top coat every day and your nails will be glittering for weeks.

How to Grow and Groom Long Nails

Growing your nails long and keeping them that way can be difficult. The longer your nails, the more at risk of breaking or chipping they become. You also need to keep them properly groomed as they can get quite dirty and unsightly. With proper discipline and these simple steps, your long nails won't be too difficult to take care of.
Things you'll need:

• Nail file
• Nail brush
• Clear nail polish

Steps and Tips:

1. Don't use your nails as tools, you risk breaking or chipping them.

2. Clean them regularly. Keeping them clean is part of basic nail care. This can be accomplished simply by washing your hands. If you work with your hands, it's very likely that dirt and grime will get under them so be sure to clean them up as soon as possible. You can use a good brush dipped in soapy water, gently scrub the top and underneath the nails to clean them thoroughly.

3. If you're a nail biter, you need to stop the habit. It's unhealthy and disgusting. You won't be able to grow them long either. To keep you from always biting them, wipe something that tastes bad on your nails. You condition yourself to stop biting your nails so you don't taste something nasty.

4. Make sure to include lots of calcium and zinc in your diet. Calcium keeps your nails strong, as well as your teeth and bones so it's a good idea even if you're not after long nails. Zinc deficiency can cause little white spots in your nails.

5. The longer nails get, the risk of breaking increases so better be careful when you clip them. Use a file to smoothen rough edges. Using a single direction, start filing from the sides going to the front. Going back and forth with a nail file can cause cracking and splitting. They should then be very pointy, so simply round off the edges. After filing, rinse your nails in cold water to get rid of any dead skin or powdered nail pieces that might be stuck under the nail.

6. Drink lots of water. Not only does this keep you properly hydrated, it's good for helping them grow properly as well.

7. Trim cuticles and apply a good and clear polish to strengthen them.

8. Not everyone's nails grow at the same rate so just be patient.

9. When cleaning under your nails be careful not to push too far or you might hurt yourself.

Chemicals on My Nails

Being into fashion, we girls love to step into the salon to get our nails done. We choose different colors depending on what our mood is, what we feel like putting on our nails, or what party we are going to. Sometimes, when we are saving some money, we just buy tiny bottles of these colorful nail polishes and do the manicure & pedicure in our own homes.

Wherever we choose to get our nails done, both have an effect on our nails. Of course, our nails will be pretty. But other than that, they could be damaged. Have you ever noticed cracks or lines on your nails when you take your polish off? I did observe mine and they have those. It happens after long exposure to nail polish.

Some say that our nails can reflect our health. They seem to be pinkish when we are totally healthy; a bit purplish when we lack oxygen. And a bit yellowish if we are always putting on nail polish. Add fine lines and cracks to that which proves that our nails get brittle as a negative effect of putting dyes on them.

What is in these pretty inks that could be harmful to our health? It is the chemical no other than formaldehyde. Is it not familiar? Yes, it is. Formaldehyde is the chemical we often hear related to embalming. It is also a primary content in plywood, glues, and adhesives. Imagine this strong-smelling chemical getting absorbed by our nails into your bloodstream. Keep in mind it is carcinogenic in nature, meaning, it can lead to cancer.

But why is this chemical in our nail polish? Formaldehyde is used as a hardener and preservative. There are other chemicals found in our nail lacquers that can cause harm to humans.

Another chemical is known as dibutyl phthalate or DBP, which is a plasticizer that prevents the nail polish from being brittle and cracking. DBP is linked to fertility concerns and that makes it dangerous for pregnant women.

Toluene is also a substance contained in polish. It suspends the paint so we would not have to shake the bottle every now and then before using it. Toluene, a chemical that does the same to gasoline, can get into our brains and make us dizzy and have a headache. It is also related to reproductive and developmental issues.

When we apply something on our bodies, we have to be aware not only of the physical improvement it could do, but also the damage it could cause. We women would not want to risk our future baby to suffer effects done by a tiny nail polish we use to get pretty nails.

How to File Your Nails Properly

The shape of your nails frame your manicure. Before you start painting them, it's important to know how to file properly. This is one of the basics that any DIY manicurist should know about.

Choose the right nail file
The most basic, inexpensive emery boards are more flexible and kinder to nails. The grit on metal files is often too harsh and can cause peeling and chipping if used incorrectly. Stick to a simple drugstore emery file if you have want a no-frills file or have brittle nails, it'll save you money too!

Clip your nails
Clip your nails if you want to take a lot of length off. Leave a square edge with enough length for you to shape it with a file.

Choose your nail shape
There are a few shapes to choose from:

OvalSquareSquovalRoundPointed/Almond

The squoval is one of the most popular shapes as it combines the elegance of the oval with the modern look of the square. (For a more detailed guide on nail shapes, check out this post.

If you have a wide nail bed, try the squoval. The oval is good for short, low-maintenance nails and the square complements narrow nails.

You should also bear in mind the manicure design you want to do when you're deciding on a shape. For every shape, start from the sides before working into the top/center. Follow the natural curve of your cuticles as a guide.

File in one direction only
Always file in one direction only, working your way towards the center. DO NOT saw back and forth with the file (a very common mistake) - this causes nails to chip and break. Be careful not to file too deeply at the edges of the nail as that can weaken the nail wall. Stroke it from the corner towards the middle and repeat till you get your desired shape.
Useful tips

You should only file your nails when they're completely dry. They are weaker and prone to chipping when wet.Nail polish helps protect during filing and prevents splitting. If you have any left on, it's a good idea to file your nails before you remove it.File gently under your nails to remove the soft nail tissue that may remain after filing.Buffing after filing smoothens and gives shine, but buffing too often can damage the nail. Buffing about once a month is recommended.
