What is Liposuction?
Liposuction is known under a series of other names such as: lipoplasty (or "fat modeling"), liposculpture suction lipectomy (or "suction-assisted fat removal"), and sometimes simply lipo. This cosmetic surgery operation removes fat from different areas of the human body. Areas usually affected can be the abdomen, thighs and buttocks, but liposuction can also be performed on the neck, backs of the arms or other body areas.
Age, gender, general health state, certain health conditions and individual characteristics can all influence the amount of fat that can safely be removed in one session, without exposing the patient to risks of complications.
Effective Liposuction Procedures
Tumescent liposuction procedureWith tumescent liposuction, general anesthesia is not needed, as it is performed under local anesthesia on the subcutaneous fat. The patient remains partly conscious, but experiences no pain. A great advantage is that all unpleasant effects and risks of general anesthesia are avoided. This liposuction technique is preferred for it offers quick recovery and over all safety.
Dry liposuction procedure
This technique is not so much used nowadays. Its main characteristic is that it uses no fluid injection into the tissue before liposuction takes place.
Wet liposuction procedure
During this procedure, a fluid that numbs the area, helps loosen fat cells and constricts blood vessels is injected into the surgical site.
Super wet liposuction procedure
This technique is basically the same as the wet liposuction, but here more fluid is used. It is the favored approach in the case of large-volume liposuction treatments.
Ultrasound-assisted liposuction procedure
When ultrasound-assistant liposuction is performed, vibrations that break up fat cells and make, thus making them easier to remove, are transmitted within the body.
Laser liposuction procedure
The laser technique helps firm the skin, and it is usually applied in the case of localized fat deposits.
Recovery and Follow-Up after Liposuction
It is recommended that elastic bandages or clothes that compress the affected areas of the body are applied. Sometimes drains might be used for the removal of fluid buildup. The need for a second procedure that would restore the looks of loose skin is dependent on the amount of fat removed from the site.
Recovery is usually quick and hospital time short, but they are both dependent on the affected area, the fat volume and other individual circumstances. A healthy lifestyle that includes diet and exercise is a condition for liposuction to have long-lasting effects.
